Abstract of the ROUTES Project
A working group led by FFRandonnee is presently preparing an ERASMUS+ project called ROUTES. FFRandonnee will apply in March 2025 for the project.
The ROUTES project aims to advance sustainable trail development across Europe by fostering knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation among trail managers, trail users, and key stakeholders. Grading of trails is also one objective. The project is structured into five work packages (WPs), each addressing critical aspects of trail development and management:
- Project Management (WP1): Led by FFRandonnée, this work package ensures effective coordination, communication, and implementation of project activities across partners and stakeholders.
- Knowledge Building (WP2): Focused on consolidating existing research and insights, WP2 lays the foundation for informed decision-making and the development of best practices. Leadership is yet to be decided, with Länsstyrelsen Halland as a potential lead.
- Development of Guidance (WP3): Under the leadership of IMBA, this WP focuses on creating tools, guidelines, and frameworks that promote grading, quality, sustainability, and accessibility in trail design and management.
- Pilot Testing (WP4): ERA leads this WP, which emphasizes the practical application of developed strategies through pilot projects that test and refine solutions for trail resilience, environmental protection, and user engagement.
- Dissemination (WP5): Led by ENOS, WP5 ensures the wide dissemination of project results through targeted communication efforts, strengthening the adoption of sustainable practices across Europe.
The project targets two primary groups: trail managers and trail users, addressing their needs through actionable deliverables. Key deliverables include a strategic framework for climate-resilient trail management, enhanced tools for quality assurance, and cross-border collaboration mechanisms to harmonize trail standards across Europe.
By integrating insights from recent conferences and leveraging partnerships with organizations like ERA, EUMA, IMBA, and EUROPARC, the ROUTES project seeks to redefine European trail development with an emphasis on sustainability, inclusivity, and cross-border cooperation. The project aligns with EU priorities for 2025, ensuring relevance and impact. The initiative also highlights innovative efforts like the integration of E-paths and the development of a ‘green chapter’ for Leading Quality Trails, reinforcing its role in enhancing Europe’s hiking and trail networks.
Outcome: ROUTES will deliver a comprehensive framework for sustainable, high-quality trails, promoting trail use as a means of environmental stewardship, cultural connection, and outdoor recreation.
